A good book, Grace "The Power To Change", available on Amazon by Dr. James B. Richards, is one that I can recommend.  Some quotes are presented below.

"Probably the greatest frustration among serious believers is the inability to change."

"Unfortunately, when people get saved, they are rarely given the truth that will set them free.  They are given the truth that will get them to heaven, but they are seldom given the truth that will set them free from the power of sin."

"Receiving and continuing in grace is the only biblical assurance we have of victory over sin."

"It is, therefore, this issue of grace that determines whether the Christian life will be one of joy, peace, rest, and victory, or one of difficulty, frustration, and defeat."

Parables of Jesus

Parables are stories that fulfill a specific function in a specific way.  Parables are extended analogies. In other words, parables are extended comparisons between two objects.  This comparison seeks to identify similarities or highlight differences to explain or clarify something about one of the objects.

What Is A Parable?

Characteristics of Jesus' Parables

  • Brief
  • Simple and repetitive
  • Composed of items, examples, or experiences from his audience's daily experience
  • Meant to have major and minor points
  • Engaging listeners at different levels
  • Shocking, surprising, challenging, appealing, and relevant
  • Often connected to the Old Testament and the kingdom of God

Parables are stories that demand a response.  More than simply instructing, Jesus seeks from his audience a response to the coming of the kingdom. To do that, the parables are designed to provoke emotions, reactions, repentance, and recognition of who Jesus is and what the coming of the kingdom means.

Why Did Jesus Teach in Parables?

It has been said that a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.  The Lord Jesus frequently used parables as a means of illustrating profound, divine truths.  Stories such as these are easily remembered, the characters bold, and the symbolism rich in meaning.  Parables were a common form of teaching in Judaism.

America's Spiritual Decline

America's spiritual decline is accelerating at a rapid pace, and a Spirit-led revival that will sweep across our nation is the only thing that can reverse this rapid decline.

The Sad State of Society
Joe Wright's prayer before the Kansas State Legislature.

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance.
"We know Your word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
"We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your word in the name of moral pluralism.
"We have worshiped other gods and called it 'multiculturalism.'
"We have endorsed perversion and called it 'an alternative lifestyle.'
"We have exploited the poor and called it 'a lottery.'
"We have neglected the needy and called it 'self-preservation.'
"We have rewarded laziness and called it 'welfare.'
"In the name of 'choice,' we have killed our unborn.
"In the name of 'right to life,' we have killed abortionists.
"We have neglected to discipline our children and called it 'building esteem.'
"We have abused power and called it 'political savvy.'
"We've coveted our neighbors' possessions and called it 'taxes.'
"We've polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it 'freedom of expression.'
"We've ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it 'enlightenment.'
"Search us, oh God, and know our hearts today. Try us, and show us any wicked in us. Cleanse us from every sin, and set us free.
"Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of Kansas and who have been ordained by You to govern this great state.
"Grant them Your wisdom to rule, and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your will.
"I ask it in the name of your son, the living savior, Jesus Christ. Amen."

That American is in a steep spiritual decline can be verified by the above links.  One link describes the economic decline, but it needs to be recognized that the spiritual decline has preceded the economic problems facing our country.

Biblical Concepts of Joy for Christians

Christ-Followers Are Meant To Have Joy in Their Lives!

You make known to me the path of life: you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.  Psalm 16:11

Joy in the Holy Spirit

"The Holy Spirit is the bond of union between the Father and Son, and that bond is love.  The Holy Spirit is just the love of God come to dwell in the heart.  When He dwells with me and my brother we learn to love each other."

"The Holy Spirit comes as a spirit of love, and if you want to know the joy of the Holy Ghost, and want Him to lead you into the rest of God and keep you there, beware above everything on earh or in hell of being unloving."

"Beloved, are you living in the joy of the Holy Ghost?  Come and accept a blessing and give yourself up to live a life of humility in which you are nothing, and a life of love like Christ's in which you only live for your fellow-men, for the kingdom of God is the joy of the Holy Ghost."  Excerpts from Andrew Murray

The Renewed Mind and How To Have It, by John Piper.

In the You Tube video above, John discusses how to have a renewed mind.  It is 41 minutes long, but is a good message.

What is Mind Renewal?

A "renewed mind" is one that has done two things: It has "put off" any sin (rebellion, self-centeredness, lust, bitterness, etc.), any corrupt thinking, or any barrier that would quench God's Spirit and has "put on" the mind of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5).  See the Put Off - Put On link below.

A New Heaven and a New Earth

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  (Revelation 21:1)

Revelation, Chapter 21

Promises to Overcomers

The following images depict ways in which GOD will be GOD to those who conquer-

  • Will eat from the tree of life (2:7)
  • Will not be hurt by the second death (2:11)
  • Will be given a white stone (2:17)
  • Will reign with CHRIST on His throne (2:26-27)
  • Will be given the morning star (2:28)
  • Will be clothed in bright garments (3:5)
  • Name will be in the book of life (3:5)
  • Will be made a pillar in GOD's temple (3:12)
  • Will participate in the new Jerusalem (3:12)
  • Will have GOD's name written on them (3:12)
And He said to me, "It is done!  I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.  To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.  (Revelation 21:6)

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.  (Revelation 21:8)

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the LORD GOD the almighty and the LAMB.  And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine upon it, for the glory of GOD gives it light, and its lamp is the LAMB. (Revelation 21:22-23)

But nothing unclean will ever enter it, or anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the LAMB's book of life.  (Revelation 21:27)

Besides the temple, what else does it lack?  Consider the following short list:
  • No more sea
  • No more tears, death, sorrow, crying or pain
  • No more sinners
  • No more fear
  • No more sun or moon
  • No more night
  • No more sin or evil
  • No more disease or injuries
  • No more curse
It would be enough to call this place "heaven" just for what it lacks.  Now consider some of the remarkable features eternity will boast:
  • Unending fellowship with GOD
  • Unending newness
  • Unending water of life
  • Unimaginable beauty
  • Uncompromised security
  • Unbroken unity between believers
  • Unlimited holiness
  • Unparalled size
  • Untold wealth
  • Unending light
  • Unrestricted access
  • Unending fruit from the tree of life
  • Unending service to GOD
  • Unending reign
With all that heaven and eternity have to offer, it is hard to see why anyone would deliberately choose to miss it.

Heaven's Joy Awaits!

Abiding in CHRIST!

Just A Closer Walk With Thee!

What does it mean to Abide in Christ?  John Piper gives a description in a YouTube video below.  And a classic by Andrew Murray, his book, Abiding in Christ, is provided in the link below.

Abide means live in. What a wonderful thought - - living in Jesus and Jesus living in me. If I live in Jesus then I keep my thoughts focused on him. If I live in him I am doing all things through him and am only doing things of which he would approve. It is hard to keep my mind focused on him. The human side of me gets sidetracked by worldly things. The worldly things take priority over Jesus in my mind. That is not what I want to happen, but it happens continuously! What is the answer? Lots of prayer and diving into the Word. The more I commune with him, the closer I am to him.

Hearing and Recognizing God's Voice

The Thoughts of God

The Spirit-Controlled Walk

The first road John Stam called "Seven Awful Steps Downward." He describes each step on this road.  The following is a paraphrase:

Step One: Adopting a careless attitude toward sin.
Step Two: Giving in to sin.
Step Three: Habitually giving in to sin.
Step Four: Surrendering to sin.
Step Five: Abandoning God for a life of sin.
Step Six: Becoming a tool of Satan to tempt others to sin.
Step Seven: Hell - and you do not have to die in order to go there. Hell is character as well as location. The person who hates everything that God loves is in hell now, and hell is in him or her.

The second road John called "Seven Glorious Steps Upward." He describes each step on this road. The following is a paraphrase:

Step OneDeveloping a resistant attitude toward sin -- determining that sin will not gain control over you.
Step Two
Overcoming sin by faith in Christ. Successfully fleeing from temptation--saying no the desire or opportunity to sin.
Step ThreeA lifestyle of victory over sin. Habitually saying no to the desire or opportunity to sin. The strength that comes from one victory helps in overcoming the next temptation.
Step Four: Discovering the "abiding life," the "victorious life," the "exchanged life." It has been termed many things by many different Christians through the ages, but in short, it is a life of intimate acquaintance with the grace of Christ and the empowerment that comes when His Spirit gains full access to your life.
Step FiveEntrance into even deeper fellowship with Christ. It started with your trusting God--now God trusts you. You are set apart for His enjoyment and for His service.
Step SixBecoming one that God calls on to do great and mighty things for His kingdom. A set-apart existence that values Christ over life itself and is willing even to suffer and die to carry out the King's bidding.
Step SevenHeaven - and you do not have to die in order to get there. Heaven is character as well as location. The person who devotedly loves everything that God loves is in heaven now, and heaven is in him or her."

Victory In Jesus!

Fruits of the SPIRIT

The most famous Bible verse about the fruits of the Spirit is in Galatians 5:22, where the apostle Paul gives us a list of nine fruit.  The list is meant as a contrast to the list of the 'deeds of the flesh' found in Galatians 5:19-20.

The Deeds of the Flesh

Nine Fruit of the Spirit

Bible Table of Contents

The Fruit of the Spirit

The Fruit of LOVE

The Fruit of JOY

The Fruit of PEACE

The Fruit of PATIENCE

The Fruit of KINDNESS

The Fruit of GOODNESS

The Fruit of FAITHFULNESS

The Fruit of MEEKNESS

The Fruit of SELF-CONTROL

These qualities or virtues are produced by the action of the Holy Spirit in us.  They grow in a person who, by faith, obeys God's Word through the guidance and power of God's Spirit.

Paul names nine qualities.  This divides nicely into three general groups, each consisting of three qualities.  The first group of three-love, joy and peace- portrays a Christian's mind in its most general aspect with special emphasis on one's relationship with God.

The second group-patience, kindness and goodness-contains social virtues relating to our thoughts and actions toward our fellow man.

The final group-faithfulness, gentleness and self-control-reveals how a Christian should be in himself with overtones of his spiritual ans moral reliability.

Each of these virtues is a quality we should greatly desire, for without them, we cannot rightly reflect the mind and way of God.

Power of the Tongue in Proverbs

Sins of the Tongue

Death and Life are in the Power of the Tongue

Life and Death are in the Words that we Speak

So, Christ followers need to be very careful of the words that we speak, words that heal rather than to destroy, words that encourage rather than those that tear down, and words of hope rather than despair.

Practice of Godliness

A Christ follower seeks wisdom, pursues holiness, and practices godliness to work out his or her salvation.  Other posts have discussed seeking wisdom and pursuing holiness, while this post discusses godliness.

What is Godliness?

In his book, The Practice of Godliness, Jerry Bridges lays out the foundation needed for godliness.

Quote from page 55: "This is godliness: God-centeredness, or devotion to God; and Godlikeness, or Christian character.  The practice of godliness is both the practice of devotion to God and the practice of a lifestyle that is pleasing to God and reflects His character to other people."

The Abundant Life

Worthy The Lamb!

Ah, Lord God you came to love, heal, and forgive, and I praise your Holy name for coming!

Jesus came to bring us the abundant life.  In John 10:10 ( ESV) Jesus said "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

I have read this verse repeatedly and wondered what this abundant life was.  I certainly wanted it, but since I did not understand specifically what the abundant life consisted of and how I would be able to get it, I continued to be puzzled by this verse.

And then it came to me in the middle of the night.  The abundant life is the Word-filled, Spirit-filled, and Prayer-filled life, and through Christ, my Savior and Lord, it can be mine.  I deeply desired this abundant life, and God gave me this desire, so I knew in my inner being that I could have it.

God speaks to me in the middle of the night because it is then that He can get my attention.  Maybe God can use me to help other believers get this abundant life, I certainly pray that He will do so.  The article links below are very helpful in understanding what this abundant life is.  And when you seek it with all your heart, mind and soul, it can be yours.

Respectable Sins - In Our Society

Jerry Bridges, author of Respectable Sins, indicates that the Church, while confronting many obvious and blatant sins - abortion, corporate corruption, homosexuality, and physical abuse - frequently misses the sins that run rampant in it's walls.

“The motivation for this book stems from a growing conviction that those of us whom I call conservative evangelicals may have become so preoccupied with some of the major sins of society around us that we have lost sight of the need to deal with our own more ‘refined’ or subtle sins” (p. 9).

So what sins are “respectable sins”? Bridges’ chapters include the following topics:
  • general ungodliness defined as a sinful attitude towards God
  • anxieties and frustrations
  • discontentment
  • unthankfulness
  • pridefulness revealed specifically in self-righteousness, even in a pursuit of theological accuracy, in prideful motives behind our achievements and revealed in a spirit of independence
  • selfishness with our interests, time, money and inconsiderableness
  • lack of self-control in eating, drinking and temperament, finances, entertainment and shopping
  • impatience and irritability
  • anger, even anger towards God, and the underlying roots of anger in resentment, bitterness, enmity, hostility and holding grudges
  • judgmentalism and a critical spirit over differing convictions and doctrinal disagreements
  • envy, jealousy, competitiveness and being controlling
  • the sins of the tongue like gossip, slander, lying, harsh words, sarcasm, insults and ridicule
  • worldliness shown financially, by our idolatry and in “vicarious immorality,” that is, the enjoyment of watching or reading the sinfulness of others.
And Bridges says his list was whittled down for print!

Christ-Followers Pursue Holiness

An excellent book that I recommend is "The Pursuit of Holiness" by Jerry Bridges.  It can be purchased at Amazon.

"To be holy is to be morally blameless. It is to be separated from sin and, therefore, consecrated to God. The word signifies separation to God, and the conduct befitting those so separated… To live a holy life, then, is to live a life in conformity to the moral precepts of the Bible and in contrast to the sinful ways of the world. It is to live a life characterized by the “(putting) off of your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires… and (putting) on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22, 24)." (Page 16)

"To pursue holiness, one of the disciplines we must become skilled in is the development of Bible-based convictions. A conviction is a determinative belief: something you believe so strongly that it affects the way you live. Someone has observed that a belief is what you hold, but a conviction is what holds you."

"In all that has been said so far about our responsibility for holiness--the necessity of conviction and commitment, perseverance and discipline, and of holiness in body and in spirit--the activity of our wills is always implied.  It is the will that ultimately makes each individual choice of whether we will sin or obey.  It is the will that chooses to yield to temptation or to say no.  Our wills, then, ultimately determine our  moral destiny, whether we will be holy or unholy in our character and conduct." (Page  123)

"Above all else, we must learn how to bring our wills into submission and obedience to the will of God on a practical, daily, hour-by-hour basis." (Page 123)

Definition of the heart mentioned earlier.  "In that definition Owen said the heart as used in the Bible generally denotes all the faculties of the soul as they work together in doing good or evil--the mind, the emotions, the conscience, and the will." Page 124)

"Nor only must we guard our minds, we must also guard our emotions.  To do this, it is helpful first to realize that while God most often appeals to us  through our reason, sin and Satan will usually appeal to us through our desires.

See the interview with Jerry Bridges in Christianity Today.

Kevin DeYoung on Why We Must Pursue Holiness.

But why must we grow in grace? Why should make every effort to increase in virtue? Why should every Christian earnestly, faithfully, diligently pursue holiness? The Bible is wonderful because it never gives us just one motivation for obedience. God says more than, “Because I told you so.” He motivates us from several different angles and based on several different reasons.

I see in 2 Peter alone twenty motivations for holiness.

See also Pursuing Holiness in an Unholy World.

In order for us to win the battle of holiness in our lives, we need a good strategy. We need to have specific battle plans to succeed. Below are some specific action plans we can implement.

Count The Cost of Following Jesus

You Are My All In All!

Although it is true that salvation is a free gift, it is also true that it will cost you everything you've got.

Luke 14:23-35

Unlike most of us, Jesus was not impressed with numbers.  Instead when large crowds followed him, He sifted them, and thinned the ranks.  He did this by telling them the Cost of Radical Discipleship- they must give up the people, comforts, and things that were most dear to them in order to follow Him.

I Have Decided To Follow Jesus

Counting The Cost of Following Jesus

5 Downsides to being a Follower of Jesus

After you understand Jesus' teachings, the downsides are just a necessary bridge to to the many blessings, and the benefits far outweigh the downsides.  Here are just some of the many blessings of following Christ:

  • Escape from hell
  • Eternal life in heaven
  • Inner joy and peace
  • A citizen of a righteous and holy kingdom that lasts forever
  • Freedom and victory over sin and the devil
  • Healing from emotional and spiritual wounds
  • An ever growing, close relationship with Almighty GOD
  • To be a vessel used by God to save souls from everlasting darkness
  • Supernatural power from GOD (miracles, healing, wisdom and discernment)
